Importance of Relationships

Relationships have a big impact on our lives. Positive relationships keep us healthy. They improve our mood and help us through stressful times. They can also increase our motivation to do activities or pursue goals.1

Certain relationships can also get stressful. Sometimes they make us question ourselves. Sometimes someone wants us to do something, and we don’t want to but we aren’t sure how to say no. Sometimes we feel alone and unsure how to connect with people.

As a military kid, relationships include unique challenges. If you move frequently, you might ask, “Why should I make friends if it won’t last?”2 Having a different background than other kids can make you feel like an outsider or misunderstood. It can also be hard to ask for what you need because it seems less important than other family concerns.

Luckily there are some skills you can learn to create and maintain healthy relationships.
